Live Your Life and Don’t Worry About What People Think of You

How often do you hold back on doing something because you’re worried about how it might come across to other people? If you do, you’re definitely not alone. Wanting to fit in and get the approval of others is a natural human need, but that isn’t to say that it’s healthy either.

Worrying about what other people think of you can have a big effect on your self-esteem and can be destructive. According to research, we tend to overestimate how often we’re thought of by other people and how negative these thoughts are. And sometimes, we convince ourselves that people will think badly of us when this isn’t actually the case at all.

Our worries may not be in line with true reality but the stress and anxiety that they create can be very detrimental for mental wellbeing. At its worse, it can be completely self-destructive. Worrying less about how you come across to other people is really important from a self-love perspective. Here are some tips to help you to achieve it!

Woman Looking In Mirror - Don't Judge Yourself

Don’t judge yourself

It’s often true that worries about other people are actually triggered by how you see yourself. If your beliefs about yourself are negative, you may be expecting to see them reflected in the actions of other people and this can be at the root of your worries.

Accepting yourself for who you are is a crucial first step in worrying less about what other people think and it can mean that you don’t need to seek approval from others at every turn. If you can treat yourself the same way that you’d like to be treated by other people, it can start to break the desire to get approval from them. This is where self-love becomes really important. Once you can stop judging yourself, you can channel your energies in more positive ways.

Move away from cultural norms

Do you feel that you have to act in a certain way for people to like and accept you? Cultural norms can fuel worries about what other people think of you, especially if you’re not following them to a tee.

If you want to stop worrying what other people think, it can be really smart to break away from the idea that you have to fit in with the crowd. Give yourself permission to live how you want and not how you feel you should. If you answer to anyone at all, make it yourself. Focus on how you can be a better version of yourself, rather than trying to please others.

Practice mindfulness

Because mindfulness is all about being in the present, it can be great for filtering out the past and the present. Most of our worries about what other people think of us is focused on things that have already happened or that may occur in the future.

If you practice mindfulness regularly, you’ll get really good at keeping your attention on the present and what is happening right now.

Fulfill your passions

Channel your energies into doing things that make you happy and bring you personal fulfillment. As an added bonus, you’ll come into contact with people who share the same interests and passions as you. You’re likely to feel more comfortable in this situation and be able show your natural self. When you’re operating from a place where you feel really good about what you’re doing, you’ll worry less about what other people may think as you’ll know that you’re doing what is right for you.

Be more ‘other centred’

We often define ourselves through our relationships and this can mean that we’re caught up in how other people see us. It’s only natural to want people to like you but putting so much focus on it can cause stress, anxiety and self-doubt. This can be picked up on by other people, which can affect the quality of your relationships and the friendships you’re able to build.

One way around this is to have an ‘other-centered’ approach to your relationships. In a nutshell, this just means being compassionate and kind towards other people. Knowing that your actions are genuine and that you have the best intentions makes it easier to stop worrying how you will be received by others.

You can’t always control how people will behave towards you or how they will think but adopting an ‘other centred’ approach gives you the compassion to recognize that it’s less about you and more about them. If you can’t control it and you know you’re not to blame, why worry about it?

7 Tips for Forgiving Yourself And Living a Life of No Regrets

We all have things that we regret in life and wish we had done things differently. We’re only human, after all! It’s often a lot easier to forgive other people for things they have done to us, while we hang onto strong resentment towards ourselves for even minor slip ups.

If you find it hard to forgive yourself for things that have happened in the past, it can have a big effect on how you treat yourself. And according to studies, it can also make you more likely to have health problems, including autoimmune conditions, heart disease and even cancer.

Learning how to forgive yourself and give yourself permission to move on from mistakes is so important for self-love. Your ultimate goal is for specific situations to no longer cause you negative emotions such as pain, anger and resentment. Here are some tips for forgiving yourself so that you can move on with your life and start to love yourself in the way you deserve.

Tips for Forgiving Yourself - Release Negative Emotions - Woman blowing a dandelion in the wind

1. Release negative emotions

When you’re holding onto strong negative emotions, it’s almost impossible to truly forgive yourself unless you’re able to release them. Whether you’re feeling guilt, shame or just generally hate yourself, you won’t be able to move forwards until you’ve dealt with the underlying emotions that you’re feeling.

It’s often the case that your reactions to even the mere thought of what you did are what is making you feel so bad and by releasing them, they won’t hold the same power. This makes it a whole lot easier to start the process of forgiving yourself!

2. Accept that you’re not perfect

None of us are perfect and we all make mistakes. When you didn’t intentionally set out to hurt someone through your actions, holding onto shame and letting it affect how you see yourself can be hugely damaging for your self-esteem.

Your mistakes aren’t ‘proof’ of your failings and they don’t make you a bad person. If you can see mistakes as an opportunity to learn and grow, it opens up a whole different mindset.

3. It’s okay to let the memory go

Are you still holding onto what happened in your mind and not able to put it aside? This could be one of the big reasons why you’re struggling to forgive yourself. It is actually a perfectly natural response given that our brains are hardwired to use past experiences to try to protect us.

That doesn’t make it helpful though! Reliving the situation in your mind fools your brain into believing that it is happening again and that sets off the stress response. It can also mean that you define yourself through the situation, rather than accepting that it happened and trying to learn from it.

It’s not about forgetting what happened. Instead, you want to acknowledge that your actions may have had repercussions but that this doesn’t need to extend to self-destructive emotions.

Tips for Forgiving Yourself - Flip The Situation Around - Woman Looking in Mirror

4. Flip the situation around

If you were told about the situation you can’t forgive yourself for, what would you tell the other person? Chances are, you’d push them to forgive themselves and point out some of the reasons why. And there’s no reason why that shouldn’t apply to you too! This is a great habit to get into whenever things don’t quite go to plan.

5. Get a different perspective

Talking about the situation with a trusted friend can give you a different take on things. Because they’re not living in your head and aren’t affected by the same thoughts and emotions as you, they have enough distance to see things that you probably can’t, especially around why you should forgive yourself.

6. Learn from what happened

Spending some time thinking about what you could have done differently can be very powerful for opening your eyes to the fact that you may not have been in the best position to do the ‘right’ thing then. For most people, there is a really good chance that you have gained new skills or insights since it happened, and you can use those to learn from the situation, so it doesn’t happen again.

Tips for Forgiving Yourself - Work on Self-Love - Multiple hands together in the shape of 1 heart

7. Work on self-love

Love is often a strong factor in our ability to forgive. The opposite can be true too – if you don’t love yourself all that much, you’re probably going to have a much tougher time forgiving yourself. You’re probably a lot harsher on yourself than you are with other people, right? This is a sign that it’s time to work on accepting yourself more and learning to love who you are. Once you’ve started to have success with this, it’s a lot easier to avoid beating yourself up for every mistake.

4 Key Mindset Shifts To Shift That Weight For Good

4 Key Mindset Shifts To Shift That Weight For Good

Using 4 Key Mindset Shifts to shift that weight for good

When it comes to losing weight the healthy way, your mindset can play a big part in whether you are going to be successful. Approaching weight loss from the wrong perspective is one of the biggest reasons why so many people fail with diets and eating plans. And on the flip side, getting your mindset right can be a game changer for successfully losing weight.

Here are some mindset shifts that could help you to supercharge your weight loss and keep the pounds off!

1. Think About Why You’re Doing It

Why you want to lose weight can make a lot of difference. Basing your reasons on being happier or looking good are a lot more likely to fail as there’s no saying that losing weight will actually make you feel good about yourself or bring you happiness.

Instead of choosing these reasons as your basis for weight loss, look at things differently. Think of your weight loss as part of a journey to becoming healthier and not just a means to getting to an end target. It’s a great opportunity to introduce healthy habits into your life that set the scene for both improving your health and losing weight into the bargain. When your ultimate goal is to live a longer and healthier life, weight loss will probably happen as a nice extra bonus as a result of these new habits.

2. Don’t Go For Broke

Trying to do too much too soon with your weight loss can work against you and this is one of the reasons why fad diets and drastically reducing your calorie intake aren’t successful in the long term. You might lose some weight to begin with, but chances are, this will quickly tail off and depending on your mindset and eating habits, you might even start gaining more weight.

When it comes to weight loss, slow and steady tends to do a lot better than trying to lose weight as quickly as possible.

You’re a lot more likely to succeed if you go for smaller shifts that add up to bigger lifestyle changes. If you do them every day, they’ll soon become habits. This is more of a long game and you probably won’t see results straight away but there’s a better chance of actually achieving your weight loss goals compared to focusing on one big goal that could fail.

You want your healthy choices to feel natural and not like a chore or as though you’re depriving yourself and this is where healthy habits can really come into their own.

3. Breaking the Food-Emotions Cycle

One of the factors that can make it hard to lose weight involves emotional eating. We often eat when we’re not really hungry and because we’re feeling certain emotions. Breaking the link between your food and your emotions is a key mindset shift to master if you want to lose weight and keep it off.

Moving away from emotional eating helps you to react to genuine hunger cues so you’ll eat to fuel your body and not in line with how you’re feeling. Mindful eating is a great way to get back in touch with your body’s hunger signals, but it can be a big challenge to master, especially if you’re used to emotional eating. Finding ways to address your emotions that don’t involve food can make a huge difference in being able to lose weight naturally.

4. Visualizing Weight Loss Success

Visualization can be a powerful technique for weight loss, especially if it’s combined with positive self-talk. How does visualization work? The theory is that it helps to rewire pathways in the brain, so it can be great for breaking habits and learning new ones.

To get the most from it, visualize yourself at your ideal weight, with your body fat transforming into a much more positive form of energy. Keep this mental image in mind as much as possible.

You can use positive affirmations and self-talk to highlight to yourself how you’ll feel when you get to this point. Don’t forget to focus on how you’ll feel with your health, fitness and wellbeing and not just how much better you’ll feel about being thinner.

Even though this is going to happen in the future, keep your self-talk in the present tense and not the future to make visualization a more effective mindset shift. Tell yourself that you have the power to change your body through the power of your mind as the finishing touch.

Doing this every day can be a lot more effective than you might think.

Start making a plan for your life long goals for your health, not just the short-term ones.

10 Reasons Why You Can’t Shift Stubborn Belly Fat

10 Reasons Why You Can’t Shift Stubborn Belly Fat

Woman wearing jeans and bra with fuller waistline - 10 Reasons Why You Can't Shift Stubborn Belly Fat - Article By Dr. Tara Clapp, ND

10 Reasons Why You Can’t Shift Stubborn Belly Fat

A little bit of abdominal fat isn’t such a bad thing. It helps to protect your vital organs, after all!

It’s a fine balancing act though as storing too much fat around your abdomen can be dangerous and has been linked to some pretty nasty health problems. We’re talking heart disease, diabetes and even cancer, to name just a few of the things that it may set the scene for. Scary, right?

Some of the culprits are fairly obvious, especially if you’re eating a lot of processed foods and not doing much exercise. There can be some surprising reasons behind belly fat though and these can come into play even if you think you’re living a healthy lifestyle. Here are some of the factors that can make you more likely to store fat in your abdominal area.

Factor #1 – You’re Eating Too Much Sugar and Trans Fats

If you eat a diet that contains a lot of sugar, you’ll probably be struggling to shift belly fat. According to studies, there is a definite link between the two. This can be largely due to the fructose content in processed foods.

Trans fats are another big no-no if you want to avoid belly fat. These are pretty much the worst type of fat you can eat as they promote inflammation and according to studies on animals, they also encourage more fat to be stored on and around your abdomen.

Factor #2 – Your Alcohol Intake

Glass of Wine - Alcohol Affects Your Weight Loss Efforts - Dr. Tara Clapp, ND

You’ve no doubt heard of a “beer belly” and this is something that can affect women too. Depending on how much you drink, it could be the culprit for stubborn belly fat. Some studies have shown that alcohol can make it harder to burn fat by slowing down metabolism for up to 6 hours after consuming it. It also makes it more likely that the extra calories it brings to the party are stored on and around the abdomen.

Factor #3 – You’re Eating a Low Protein Diet

If you want to stay trim, it’s really important to get enough protein in your diet. Protein helps you to feel more satiated and can mean that you consume less calories. People who eat a lot of protein tend to have very little in the way of belly fat.

Low protein diets are more likely to result in belly fat, according to studies.

Factor #4 – You Don’t Eat Enough Fiber

If your diet is low in fiber, you can be more likely to store belly fat. Observational studies show that getting plenty of soluble fiber reduces the chances of this. In one particular study that involved over 1,100 men and women, every extra 10g of soluble fiber led to a 32% decrease in how much belly fat was stored. This has a lot to do with the fact that low fiber increases your appetite and belly fat.

Factor #5 – You’re Scared of Eating Fat

Sliced Avocados - Avocados are Healthy Fats - Dr. Tara Clapp, ND

Fat has had a bad rep and this can put you off eating it. While it’s true that you don’t need a lot of the unhealthier fats, good fats can help you to lose weight and keep belly fat to a minimum.

Monounsaturated fats are one of the good fats and are important for satiety. They’ll help you to feel fuller for longer so you’re less likely to make unhealthy food choices that increase your potential for storing belly fat.

Sources of monounsaturated fat include: avocadosalmonds, cashews and peanuts. cooking oils made from plants or seeds like canola, olive, peanut, soybean, rice bran, sesame and sunflower oils.

Factor #6 – You Have Too Much “Bad” Bacteria in Your Gut

Gut bacteria play several important roles in your health, such as communicating with your immune system and producing certain vitamins. Your gut bacteria can also affect how different foods are digested and produce chemicals that help make you feel full. As a result, they can affect your weight.

Two groups of beneficial bacteria are dominant in the human gut, the Bacteroidetes and the Firmicutes. According to research, an imbalance of gut bacteria can have an effect on your weight and how much fat you store on your abdomen.

Obese patients have a lesser diversity and richness in the bacterial component of gut microbiota than normal-weight subjects. Obese individuals have shown to present increased Firmicutes and decreased Bacteroidetes in feces, regardless of diet intake.

Firmicutes are instrumental in increasing fat absorption. An abundance of Firmicutes in the gut is influenced by diet: people eating normally had more Firmicutes bacteria compared to people that were denied food for several days.

Factor #7 – You’re Stressed

Woman stressed looking at laptop - Stress Affects Weight Loss - Dr. Tara Clapp, ND

Under a lot of stress? It could be one of the reasons why you’re storing belly fat. The stress hormone, cortisol, can lead to weight gain, especially in the abdominal area. Rather than going on your body across the board, cortisol often encourages extra calories to be stored as abdominal fat.

Factor #8 – You Don’t Sleep Well

If you spend a lot of time tossing and turning in the average night, there’s a much higher chance that you’ll store belly fat. Poor sleep is linked to weight gain in general and according to some studies, it also predisposes you to abdominal weight gain in particular.

A large-scale study of more than 68,000 women found that those who were sleeping less than 5 hours per night gained a lot more weight compared to those who slept 7 hours or more.

Factor #9 – You Don’t Get Enough Magnesium

Getting enough magnesium in your diet can lower your blood sugar and insulin levels. That’s not too surprising when you consider that this mighty mineral is involved in over 300 chemical reactions in your body! Some of these reactions have an effect on your body’s ability to burn fat so it can have an indirect impact on your weight.

Factor #10 – Your Exercise Isn’t Intense Enough

woman doing fitness exercises

Not all exercise is equal when it comes to busting belly fat and keeping it off, especially if your workouts aren’t intense enough. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a good option but anything that involves reasonably intense exercise several times per week should help.

Tips for Staying Happy and Stress Free

2019 Is The Year Of Happy

Have you spent a lot of 2018 wishing that you were happier with your life and less stressed? A lot of the time, we take our happiness cues from the outside, especially ones that other people can see. And if we don’t meet these standards or ideals, we can quickly feel that happiness is out of reach. Rather than putting your ideals of happiness onto other people or in material things, it’s super important to recognize that true happiness has to come from within you. Ready to start finding your happy in 2019? Here are some tips for being happier and less stressed in the year ahead.

Tips for Finding Your Happy, Stress Free Place

words actually I can on paper

Move away from negative thinking

If negative thinking is a problem for you, it’s definitely something you’ll want to change in 2019 to achieve your year of happy. Negative thinking can be a vicious cycle that leads to a lot of stress, anxiety and depression. Breaking this cycle is one of the best things you can do for living a happy and stress-free life.

woman enjoying drinking her hot beverage

Be Present

Being in the present moment is super important for stopping negative thinking in its tracks. It helps to put some distance between yourself and the things that trigger your negative thoughts. It forces your mind to become aware of negative thoughts and take a step back from them so that they lose their power.

glass bubble with tree reflected inside

Reframe Your Thinking

Reframing your thinking is also a good goal for promoting a happy, stress free life. Do you always tend to think negatively about situations?  It can be a big challenge to flip this around and see the positive side of things instead. Start trying to put a positive slant on situations that would normally cause you stress and bring your mood down.

For 2019, aim to reframe your thinking at least once a day. Over time, you’ll train your mind to look for the positives and encourage different thought patterns.

Immerse yourself in authentic experiences

Linking your happiness to outside factors often fails to achieve the happiness you were hoping for. Instead of setting goals relating to money, status and other things that you think will make you more satisfied with your life, swap them for authentic experiences that make you feel genuinely happy. Focusing on things like your hobbies and friendships can help you to feel emotions such as joy, contentment and relaxation.

This has been backed up by a study carried out by a psychology professor at Cornell University. He set out to see whether spending money or having experiences ultimately made people happier. The end result? Experiences had the power to increase happiness, partly due to the fact that we tend to experience them with other people. This gives them more meaning and makes them more memorable.

I know this is true. When talking with my kids, it’s always the vacations they remember, not the Christmas and birthday presents!

woman looking at herself in the mirror

Practice Self-acceptance

In a 2014 study that looked at “happiness habits”, self-acceptance was one of the habits that was deemed most likely to lead to genuine happiness. We’re often a lot kinder to other people than we are to ourselves. If this is true for you, it’s time to change this.

Being kind to yourself is one of the best things you can do to make 2019 the year of happy but it can be difficult to achieve, especially if you’re used to being negative about yourself.

If you feel you’re not good enough, you’re more likely to look outside of yourself for happiness. If you’re setting intentions around happiness in the New Year, it’s hugely important to work on self-acceptance first and commit to self-love in 2019.

woman with hands clasped in reflection with smile on face

Show compassion and gratitude

As you may know, gratitude and random acts of kindness have both been shown to improve happiness and life satisfaction. One of the reasons for this is the fact that it helps you to feel better about yourself.

Being thankful can have a major impact on your wellbeing and studies have linked keeping a gratitude diary to optimism, improvements in mood and better physical health. Having a more positive outlook on life can help to reduce stress and cut back on negative thinking, which makes gratitude a very underrated way to feel happier about life.

A gratitude diary isn’t the only way to feel more thankful. A few ways that you can practice gratitude can include sending heartfelt and handwritten notes to people who have made a positive difference to your life, taking a walk in nature and feeling grateful for the natural world around you, and reflecting at mealtimes on the work involved in getting food onto your plate.

Research has repeatedly linked kindness to feeling happier. One theory for this involves the production and release of neurochemicals that create a “high” … not that dissimilar to a chemical “high”! It also encourages your brain to release oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone”.

Set & Keep Your New Years Resolutions for 2019

Struggle to Stick to New Year Resolutions? Here’s How to Change That This Year…
Keep Your New Years Resolutions for 2019

Do you tend to start off the year with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm about what you’ll change and find your motivation waning by February? If this sounds familiar, your willpower may not be the real problem. It may actually be your choice of resolutions! Especially if you’re picking ones that are likely to end in disappointment in the long run. These tips should help you to create resolutions that you find a lot easier to keep!

Keep things simple

Do you often come up with a fairly long list of resolutions? This could be a big part of the reason why you struggle to see them through. Spreading yourself too thin between different resolutions is one of the main reasons why people fail with New Year goals.

To increase your chances of success, don’t feel that you need to overhaul everything you feel is wrong with your life in one go. Chances are, you’ll quickly get overwhelmed and feel frustrated that you’re not getting anywhere.

You’re more likely to succeed with New Year resolutions if you concentrate your efforts on just one or two areas and do them well. Pick just the one big goal, such as losing weight or quitting smoking, as this is going to take a lot of your energy and focus.

You’re less likely to have issues with your willpower if you’re more realistic with the goals you set yourself. Get that right and you’ll find it a lot easier to stick to resolutions!

Set yourself bite-sized goals

Within your one or two big resolutions, working towards a big end goal can be daunting. When you first set a resolution, it can feel like you’re a million miles away from getting there. The end result? You’re more likely to give up altogether.

One way around this involves breaking down resolutions into mini goals that help you to see your progress more easily. Ideally, this will involve goals that can be measured.

If you’re planning to lose weight, set a target for how much weight you’ll aim to lose each week. When you start to feel your clothes getting looser, you will be motivated to stay on track! Or if you’re aiming to up your intake of leafy greens, aim for at least one serving most days.

Once you’ve broken your goals down like this, make a point of checking in with yourself regularly to see how you’re doing with them. If you can see yourself making progress, there’s much more chance that you’ll keep working towards achieving the bigger picture. As you make progress, you may need to tweak your mini goals to help you get there.

Reward your progress

You don’t need to wait until you get to the end goal to reward yourself. The great thing about mini goals is the opportunity to give yourself an incentive to keep going whenever you make progress towards the bigger resolution. Just make sure it’s not something that will ruin your hard work to date. No sweet treats if you’re trying to be healthier or lose weight! Think of some fun things you can do to celebrate your progress.

Write them down

Writing down your New Year resolutions and keeping them somewhere visible can keep you motivated and remind you of why you’re on the journey in the first place. You’ll feel more accountable to yourself and are more likely to be successful in keeping your New Year resolutions.

You can take this even further by journaling about your resolutions. By diving deeper into how you’re doing with them, you can see how you may be self-sabotaging your goals … even without realizing that you are.

Use affirmations

Affirmations are another powerful tool that can help you to stick to your New Year resolutions. Writing these down and repeating them every day is a great way to encourage your mind to embrace it as the truth.

Your affirmations don’t have to be complicated or profound. In fact, simple ones can work really well. Depending on your resolution, it may be along the lines of “I am calm under pressure” (if you’re resolved to stress less) or “I eat a healthy diet” (if better nutrition is your goal). Whatever you choose to say to yourself, it’s super important to make it a habit.

We cover affirmations extensively in “28 Day Healthy Habits Kickstart”, as they are so important for staying on track. Mindset is everything!

Accept that slip-ups happen!

Resolutions are a challenge to keep and most people will have setbacks. Let’s face it, it’s not realistic to think that it’s all going to be smooth sailing when you’re making big changes to your lifestyle. If you encounter a setback on your journey, it’s not a sign that you’re failing or that you should give up on your goal(s).

How you handle setbacks is super important when it comes to keeping New Year resolutions. Just re-route yourself to get back on track. Want to make sure that you can channel it in the right way? Think about what might have triggered setbacks and learn from it for the future. For me, eating clean becomes a challenge when I am out socially if I am hungry. So, if I eat before I go, I will be less likely to overindulge. I can have a bite and be satisfied!
